Jawbone UP 2 + 3
What is UP 2 + 3?
Jawbone UP 2 + 3 represent the premium lifestyle offering in the Jawbone health tracker line. Jawbone UP 2 + 3 integrates Jawbone monitoring technology (heart rate monitoring, activity tracking, food tracking, and smart coach) into a sleek, discrete lifestyle form factors that come in a variety of colors, textures and band styles. Which UP best represents you and your daily life?

Jawbone UP 2 + 3 is designed by Yves Behar and fuseproject
Process
The design process for UP 2 + 3 consisted of designing a smaller, more compact offering than any other health tracker on the market at the time. The design process also included exploration around how to provide customers a range of health trackers that provided different monitoring capabilities at different price points.

UP 2 would provide activity tracking, food tracking, and smart coach but not heart rate monitoring at a cheaper price point.

UP 3 on the other hand would provide all monitoring technology.

To reflect these price points, UP 2 devices would have a cheaper to produce 2D laser etched texture shield and UP 3 would have a 3D texture shield that is machines flat then progressively formed (below)
Prototyping process
Prototyping was a critical aspect to testing/ developing that various designs and user experiences that come with this device. Everything from hardware, strap/ rope construction and buckle clasp design were prototyped and tested from rough fidelity all the way up to cosmetic model level (below view)

With heart rate monitoring being enabled on UP 3, we needed to develop the band design that is not only universal to fit all size wrists but also has the heart rate monitoring contacts in a good location to take a reading. The solution is an array or 4 contacts on the inside of the band that was tested hundreds of times to determine the perfect position for use by all wrist sizes.
Texture shield development
The texture shield started as a simple shape and evolved into numerous options for both UP 2 + 3.

UP 3 shield designs have their texture's CNC'd on a flat die cut piece of aluminum and then are progressively formed to be given then complex curvature (top and middle row below view).

UP 2 shield designs are progressively formed then laser etches to give their texture (bottom row).

The bottom shield were designed to house sensor technology, custom pogo pin charging set up and compliance markings. Pogo pin's allowed design to keep overall size smaller then our competitors (far right side of all 3 rows below).

All shield incorporate localized material thinning and micro perforations for UI indication.
Prototype process
Making rough to cosmetic model level prototypes were created to test clasp/buckles, strap lengths, strap attachment designs, and  the user experience of taking the device on and off (below view).
UP 2 + 3 together
Following numerous rounds of cosmetic models, we moved into final design for UP 2 + 3 (below view).

UP 2 exploded view
At the core of the UP 2 rope is molded plastic spine chassis with rope housing's mounted on each side. These rope housings act as co molding fixture points for the TPU ropes that house all of the adjustable hardware like the slider and hook.

The primary electronics chassis including PCB, battery and LED matrix assembly is mounted on the plastic spine chassis before being sandwiched between to top texture shield and bottom shield. (below view).

UP 3 context views
UP 3 is designed to perform and integrate into your life regardless of the context.
UP 3 exploded view
At the core of the UP 3 band is molded plastic spine chassis with flexible inner strap cores mounted on each side. This inner core is what components like clasps/buckles and heart rate contacts are hard mounted too. The TPU strap construction is co molded onto this assembly (below view).

Packaging construction
The design around the packaging for UP 2 + 3 is all about displaying the product like a piece of jewelry. The key monitoring technology is displayed in graphical form at the front of the packaging so a potential buyer can approach and quickly gauge what they are buying from a product a feature standpoint. The back of the packaging goes into greater detail about the features provided.
